2024 Award Criteria

Award Criteria

2024 awards

A lot of hard work goes into arranging the awards and evening, so we value support from the industry to make it a continuing success, showcasing the best of what is happening in the Guernsey property and construction industry.

We are keen that as many entries are submitted as possible to ensure we showcase the best of the industry. It’s been a tough time for many, but there are still some shining examples for us to highlight and celebrate.

There will be an unbiased independent judging panel, and of course, the excellent standard of entries from you will showcase the skills and qualities of the Guernsey property and the construction industry.

The reorganisation means that there is a new schedule for the awards, with the Awards Dinner being held on Saturday 5th, October 2024. We look forward to welcoming you to another entertaining evening celebrating the achievements of our industry. We will have a different entertainment at the event, and a local band to finish out the night. Good luck to all the entrants.

Awards and judging

General Notes In the 2024 Awards information pack, you will find the criteria against which each individual award will be judged.  In making a nomination for any award, we want nominators to consider how the individual, team or project will meet the following criteria.  This is important for the nominee, should the judging panel wish to approach them.

  • The nomination period is from Monday 1st May until Monday 31st July, which is the final date by which a project should be practically completed, and the nomination form received by our committee.
  • Nominations are welcome from all, including the public and peers, and are to be made online only via the website: www.guernseyconstructionawards.com.
  • All nominees will then be contacted by Karen Solway and asked to complete an official entry form with supporting evidence.
  • All official entry forms should be forwarded to the Judging Panel on an appropriate form for each category.
  • The official entry form will require the details of how each criterion has been met, which is what the judges will score against. It will be a requirement that all the detail are entered on thisform, where text will be limited to 500 words in each criteria, additional information will be accepted as an appendix to this form.

  • Photo’s will be require for construction categories, initially as part of the appendix, arrangements will be made with each nominee to obtain the photos.

  • All official entry forms will be forwarded to the Judging Panel on an appropriate form for each category. The judging panel will meet to make their decisions in August-September.
  • A scoring system will be implemented and followed; all judges will all adhere to a high standard. No judge will be allowed to score on any project with a conflict of interest so that judging will be completely impartial.

Please note the only Award that may be judged outside this process and qualification time is the: Lifetime Achievement Award

Sustainability Award

Sustainability Award

Sustainability is commonly defined as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. The construction industry can make an exciting contribution to this principle in designing, building and regenerating homes, offices and retail spaces that meet the criteria of sustainable architecture and construction. These buildings will have a positive impact on the environment.

Applications will be considered from any “Sustainability” project completed from 1st August 2023 to 31st July 2024.

Nominations are welcomed from all types of developments and use of products that demonstrate a positive attitude toward sustainable construction with a clear focus on environmental benefits for the builder/developer and end user.

Nominees will be asked to clearly demonstrate a desire to reduce the impact the construction has on the environment when designing and planning, not only in the construction process but also the energy consumed by the end user.

Specific areas that are to be considered include:

  • The total energy used.
  • Water use and water saving techniques.
  • Energy use and energy saving techniques.
  • Construction materials.
  • Waste management.
  • Identify using original and sustainable materials sourced from the local supply chain.

The award winner will have clearly demonstrated a clear and measurable gain focusing on the long-term benefits to the environment.

The award is not restricted to new buildings and the Judging Panel will consider regeneration of existing buildings that clearly demonstrate a benefit to the environment.

The project submitted will be recognised as having won, and the project team (as outlined in the submission document) will all be recognised.

Best Use of Innovation

The construction industry is constantly delivering projects which are more and more demanding. The industry constantly embraces this challenge and employs new and innovative solutions to deliver these projects.

This award category acknowledges the innovation of the industry across all areas. From the planning and design of the project, the contract procurement and management, the use of new products, off-site construction, frontline and back office support, and the application of construction methods to the monitoring of the final performance of the building. This can be a people award, system or process that has provided innovation to your business or project.

Nominations can be made by an individual or business involved in the project or the supply chain, whether they are clients, consultants, contractors, sub-contractors or suppliers. However, submissions must demonstrate how innovation has been developed to fit local needs and not simply use another organisation’s technology.

To establish boundaries under which innovation can be marked is a paradox, the independent panel of judges will score each submission on its own merits but will be looking for the affect the solution has on the delivery of the project and the benefit it brings to the industry, clients and community.

The following headings offer guidance under which the submission will be judged, but the submission can demonstrate specific areas of innovation to be considered by the judges.

We welcome nominations into this category that follow the following criteria:

  • Demonstrate a clear and significant improvement in approach or technology.
  • Overcome a major technical challenge that leads to progress.
  • Successfully develop processes, products or services.
  • Develop employees to help it gain a competitive advantage.
  • Takes an existing idea and develops it for the local benefit.
  • Demonstrate the benefits to the local and wider construction industry, the clients, end users and the environment.
